“I need to…” “I should…” “I have to…”

Writing my “morning pages” this, well, morning 😉 I found myself saying, “I need to do some more quilting on the table runner so I can take it to Linda tomorrow.”

I NEED TO. Not I want to. Not I get to. Not I am able to. But I NEED TO.

NEED TO isn’t even an action, is it? It is more of a precursor to guilt. And who NEEDS that?

I GET TO take a walk with these two beauties today!

I GET TO take a walk with these two beauties today!

“I HAVE TO work really hard to take care of my family. I SHOULD help to save the world by carrying my own reusable grocery bags with me to Walmart (I should, ya know). I NEED TO lose some weight.” Ugh.

Now, let’s try saying those same sentences just a little differently.

“I ENJOY caring for my family! I GET TO help save the world! I AM ABLE TO lose weight!”

Sounds almost like a Super Hero, doesn’t it!?!

There are painters who transform the sun into a yellow spot, but there are others who, thanks to their art and intelligence transform a yellow spot into the sun. -Pablo Picasso
