My Last First Day of School…

01FirstDayofSchoolThe first day of school used to be my favorite day of the year, but this year I am enjoying, no, savoring it for very different reasons.

Today is the last first day of school I will ever see as a mother. Shane, my baby, is a Senior this year. Here he is, ready to escort his niece and my granddaughter, Emma, to her first day in First Grade in a new school.

I remember Emma’s mom’s first day. I made her a purple print corduroy skirt, I can still picture the white turtleneck, the saddle shoes, the filled to bursting backpack. It was all I could do not to chase that bus down the road, crying and begging her to come back.

Funnily enough, that’s exactly what I did that very afternoon when the bus stopped and then left without dropping my baby off. Poor little thing was too scared to get off the bus and I was too green a mother to demand they release her from the beast. I stood in shock until it started to 01Busmove away, then I ran after it – waving, crying and yelling.

The days move so quickly now. You don’t have to remind me to savor the moments anymore—every day is a wonder, every day is another miracle. I am thankful for this day.

  1. Oddly enough I actually remember boarding the bus for my first day of school! And a number of other bus moments. But my memories aside, you are absolutely right that each day is filled with moments that make memories. Some of our most ordinary activities hold the dearest of memories, and are to be cherished.

  2. Every day is a wonder – that’s for sure. My little ones are yet to begin school – so I am at the other end of the spectrum – cherishing each moment.

    • So glad you stopped by my blog! So glad you are cherishing your little ones, it amazes me how even just /hearing/ about you cherishing your moments with your children spreads the happiness to me too. Life is good!

  3. Whew… deep breath! It truly is such a milestone event isn’t it? :c)

  4. May not be your last first day with him — what if you have to take him to college?
