Child Abuse? Or just Good, Clean Fun?

I covered the Polar Bear Plunge at Offut Lake Saturday morning. I was more than a bit disturbed to see how many children were jumping into the water. This gal is 7 years old. Yes, she wanted to do it, but did she really know what she was getting herself into? Afterward I asked her if she would do it again, she said not only “No,” but, in her own childish way, “Hell no!”

The freedom to choose is one thing, but do we really need to allow 7 year olds to jump into frozen lakes just because they want to?

  1. I don’t know – on the one hand now she won’t get the idea in her head to do it when no one else is around, but on the other hand I’m pretty sure my parents wouldn’t have let me (ok, my mom would have been out there participating, but my dad has sense :)).

  2. Life provides all of us learning experiences. If you had added a followup question like — did you think about this beforehand? Do you think you learned to make better decisions or will you be afraid of new things?

Child abuse is needless cruelty — not needless stupidity –> you can’t protect the world from stupidity = = = nanny state
